One test against another, with a verdict

Each comparison gives a plain verdict in its first paragraph, a table of what each test measures, how it is scored, its reliability and who owns it, where each is weak, and which to take for which purpose. This is the only part of the site where trademarked test names appear.

All comparisons

  • Big Five vs HEXACO: which should I take? Both are sound trait models and they overlap heavily. HEXACO adds an honesty-humility factor and reshuffles agreeableness and emotionality; the Big Five has far more norms, research and free instruments.
  • Big Five vs MBTI: which should I take? The Big Five, for almost every purpose: it measures continuous traits with published reliability and predictive validity, while the MBTI sorts people into sixteen types that about half of retakers do not get again.
  • Is 16Personalities accurate? Partly. 16Personalities measures five continuous traits much like the Big Five, then reports them as one of sixteen four-letter types, which throws away the measurement and makes the result unstable for anyone near the middle.
